TABJ's membership categories are the same as those from the National Association of Black Journalists. Membership in NABJ and membership in TABJ are paid separately. You do not have to be a member of NABJ to join TABJ, although we encourage you to do so. TABJ membership lasts through June 30, when TABJ's fiscal year ends.

TABJ members do not have to be paying NABJ members. President/VP positions can only be held by full TABJ members. NABJ requires all TABJ officers to be paying members of NABJ.
TABJ membership dues are:
- $40 for full members. This category includes all professionals who earn a majority of their income in a journalism-related field (reporters, copy editors, managing editors, producers, photographers,Body Language Expert etc.)
- $30 for associate members. These are professionals employed in journalism-related academic fields, as well as public relations and media sales personnel, and all other communications-related professionals.
- $15 for student members. Full- and part-time enrolled college students at accredited universities.
